Religion of the Pharaohs, Winter 2002
Paper #2
Due:  Wednesday January 16 BEFORE the field trip*

In a well-constructed 1000-word essay reflect upon the following:

Religious beliefs and practices in Egypt during the New Kingdom exhibited both remarkable changes since the Old and Middle Kingdoms and remarkable continuities.  Pick a few aspects of ancient Egyptian religiosity and show how they transformed (or did not!) in the New Kingdom.  Your paper must address funerary practices or beliefs about the afterlife, but it also could address Akhenaten and the Amarna period, the role of the pharaoh, or any other theme we have discussed in class.

A well-constructed essay will contain a thesis and argument driving your paper.  It will also demonstrate your abilities to analyze a variety of sources and put the information and your assessment of that information together in a new way that moves beyond a simple repetition of ìfactsî you learned.  Your paper should take into account the following:
ï the assignments and class discussions from January 10 through January 15.  ( I  do not expect you to analyze every aspect of everything from this course.  I DO expect you to ground your writing in the assignments for the course, demonstrating that you are grappling with the larger religious and cultural issues the assignments raise as well as the ìraw dataî about religious life in ancient Egypt.
ï at least some evidence from primary sources from Lichtheim.
ï You should concentrate your energies on the New Kingdom assignments, only using the Old Kingdom or Middle Kingdom material as a reference or base point.  Your analysis should focus on the New Kingdom.

YOU SHOULD NOT DO ANY OUTSIDE RESEARCH FOR THIS PAPER.  Also, because this is a short paper, you should not have extended quotations (such as long block quotations) from any one source.  You may quote passages from the texts to support your argument, but do not get carried away.  You may use the websites assigned for the course.

Papers will be graded for the cohesiveness and persuasiveness of the argument, originality of thought, demonstrated competency with the material.  Papers with significant grammar and spelling mistakes will not be accepted.  Late papers will not be accepted.  Further grading policies are on the course description handed out the first day of class.

The mechanics
You should include references to the works that you draw upon in your paper.  Parenthetical citations are fine for this paper.  For example, (David, 45) or (Shafer, Temples, 12).  If weíve read more than one item by the same author, please be certain that you cite the book/article as well as the author so that there is no confusion.  Similarly, if you are attributing a particular argument to a particular author, be sure that you cite the author of the work, not the editor of the larger book or encyclopedia.

Plagiarism will be reported to the deanís office.  If you quote someone else word-for-word, you must put that passage in quotation marks and provide a citation for the source.  If you use someone elseís idea and put it in your own words, you also should provide a citation.

*Papers are due in the drop-box or in my email box BEFORE we depart for the field trip unless you have already indicated to me that you may have a conflict with the field trip do to work or some other similar commitment.  If you have already indicated your conflict, your paper is due no later than 1:30, the scheduled time for the beginning of class.
